wip & fp: bad bird embroidery

I freakin’ love Bad Bird’s (aka Andrea Zuill) embroidery patterns.  Yes, her illustrations and fibre art are amazing, but there’s just something I adore so much about the embroidery patterns.

I just finished up work on on the mermaid that was offered as the August 2008 free pattern on her blog.  She’s an adorable little sea creature.  Now I just have to decide what I’m going to do with her.  Diaper bag?  Quilt?  Appliqued to the back of a jacket?  I just can’t figure it out quite yet.

Next up on the Bad Bird roster I’ll be taking a stab at Lottie the Dog Face Girl and Siamese Sisters Rose and Daisy.  I picked up these patterns for my next arts and craft project.

I found these really cute vintage stools, but they are in desperate need of new upholstering.  How cute are these going to look on pieces of matching furniture?  I’m really excited to show off a finished product.

Gotto go and get my stitch on!

tutorial: maternity pants

Grosgrain has done it again!  I’m really digging this tutorial on how to change a regular pair of pants into a stylish pair of maternity pants.  I can’t wait to get some free time and try it out for myself.  My results won’t be quite as pretty because I’m lacking in the serger department, but I’m hoping for a functional pair of that are pretty on the outside.

Have a look-see at the tutorial by clicking the image below.

Pebble Quilting Demo

I happened across this posting today and it got me feeling particularly inspired.  Frenzied and inspired.  Since watching it I’ve been searching the internet for a new machine.  I love my Old Blue, but it’s a very small model and it doesn’t have a lot of space for quilting.  I also need (want) a bunch of new attachments in order to do some free motion embroidery.

Oh gosh, I’m so excited. I’m hoping that I’ll have some happy new machine news within the next day or two.

my latest obsession: dresden plate

The Dresden Plate design has to be my absolute favourite thing in quilting right now.  I am truly and absolutely obsessed.

What I want is to create a quilt of my own, what I need is the energy to do so.  Imagining a project that could take weeks or months has always been a huge road block, and I think this is where my motivation is dying here.  But soon enough I will be off work and I’ll have a little free time to work on personal craft projects.

For now I just wanted to share some of my inspirations.  For more quilt inducing photos, check out the Dresden Plates in Quilting group on Flickr.

bread (finally)

After several failed attempts at bread making I’m proud to say that I have finally produced a loaf that is not only edible but down right tasty.  I’m so happy that I’ve finally found a recipe and a machine that works for me.  Super simple and easy to put together and in the end I have a light, airy and fresh loaf of bread within hours.

Bliss.

Design*Sponge will be offering a free monthly download of a desktop calender!  Each month they will feature a new artist.  I already have September up and ready to go on my desktop.  Can’t wait to see what’s (and who is) in store for October.

Thanks so much for this!

fp: nursing pillow

A couple weeks back I may have hinted heavily that I wanted the newest Lotta Jansdotter book “Simple Sewing for Baby.”  Well, birthdays have come and gone and I just so happen to now posses that wonderful book.

I have to say, I really, really like the projects and the patterns that are included in this volume.  I think the list is almost entirely packed with essentials not only for the new baby, but a growning toddler too.  I’ve already drawn a lot of inspiration from the tutorials Jansdotter has presented.

The first piece I wanted to show off is the nursing pillow.  A super simple design that only took about an hour to cut and sew the body pieces (but of course, that does not include the time it took to choose the actual fabrics).  What took me the longest was getting off my bum to go to the store to buy stuffing.

In the end, here she is in all her glory.  I hope she comes in handy.

Thought I’d share some quick shots of one of the many pieces I’ve been working on.  I’ve been hoarding quite a stash of vintage kids prints.  They’re one of the things that I have never been able to leave behind at thrift shops and yard sales.  Well, finally the time has come that I have the gusto to cut them up and make something new.

The front of the quilt is made entirely with vintage fabrics.  The backing is an adorable piece of fabric I picked up from the lovely people at Reprot Depot at last years Puces Pop.  As always I’ve used a a piece of flanelette sheet for the batting.

I just need to do a bit more machine quilting and add the final pieces of bias tape (super wide, super handmade).  I can’t wait to see it hanging over the edge of the crib.

I’m really digging Craftig!  It’s a new social networking site meant specifically for crafters.  Sorted into a number of subject categories you can search for or add web sites, tutorials, articles and lots more.  Personally I’m going into tutorial overload.

It’s seems to be in its early stages still, but every day it seems to gain more users and more postings.  I can’t wait until it’s had a little more time and more people are adding their favourite pages.
