nesting

(Sorry for the poor picture quality. Not even trying here…)

It’s been happening for a while; that innate need to make my house make sense for a baby.  It had been the little things – collecting diapers and clothing, assembling furniture and re-organizing shelves.  But since Saturday I have been in full nesting mode.  Even though I’m intensely tired most of each day, there is inevitably a point where I am overwhelmed with energy and the want to do something.

On Saturday I thought something exciting was about to happen.  The contractions were coming every 5 or so minutes and lasting about a 90 seconds each.  But, there was no pain.  None at all.  Just a tight basketball belly.  I know I’ve never done this before, but I was sure I’d be feeling a little something more if I was going into full blown labour.

The funny thing was that all day the only thing I could think about doing was getting home to re-paint a desk I had purchased from The Salvation Army.  This desk was driving me crazy.  I knew it was sitting in my house just looking crummy.  All drab white paint with chips missing here and there.  I wanted this desk to be right – to make sense – before the baby came.

I rushed home, grabbed my partner, sandpaper and paint and away we worked.  There was a brief interruption in our progress because Mr. Claus was having his parade just down the street (it would be rude not to go).  Soon enough though the desk had a nice coat of fresh paint and a whole new outlook on life.

Then, from the corner of my eye, I spotted it.  The dresser.  My baby’s boring white dresser.  All drab white paint with chips missing here and there….

I should have taken some before pictures, but this whole evening felt like a race against time (and baby).  I’m so happy these projects are done.  Next I’ll move on to recovering some yard sale stools and sewing some much-needed winter scarves.

I love me some Decor It Yourself, and I was especially happy to see the newest video focussed on DIY clocks repurposed from just about anything.

I’m in a bit of a tic-toc situation myself lately, I have this wonderfully kitschy clock passed down from my grandmother but it just needs a little work in the hands department.  Meg’s newest video has provided me with the much needed motivation boost I’ve been hoping for.

Oh!  I also wanted to share one of my more recent thrifty acquisitions.  This lovely I found at my truly beloved Donnybrook in Warkworth, Ontario.  I had to wait around at the auction table for ages for her, and to my surprise I was the only bidder.  What’s happened to the general publics sense of clock humour?

is more than a little deceiving.  If only you knew what it took to make this thing fit me.

I’ve been playing around with clothing a little more recently and I thought I’d give applique a try.  I’ve done lots of reverse applique and patchwork in the past, but nothing quite like this.

It’s all a relatively simple pattern, but I like it because it reminds me of peacock feathers.  Maybe when I grow up I can be a beautiful boy peacock; all proud and boastful.  Only time will tell….

I’ve been working away on stuff for the Recycled Clothing Fashion Show.  Thus far I have 6 (somewhat) beautiful and casual outfits fashioned from thrifted clothing.

I’ll be showing off pictures soon.

I’ve also been working hard on a line of yoga pants made from second hand men’s t-shirts.  They’re pretty darn comfortable, and cute to boot!

Pictures will come soon (I promise!).
